Like many others, I give treats to my dog in much the same way as I like to spoil myself (which is probably too often)! However, when I do, I like to give Coco one that’s healthy and appropriate to the situation: like rewarding good behaviour on a walk, or a long-lasting vegan dog chew to keep her occupied when I’m working.

But whilst there are many vegan dog chews and treats available, it doesn’t necessarily mean they’re all healthy. So, here at Vegan Mum I tried out a variety of products with our canine testing panel and compiled this list of the best vegan dog treats in the UK to help you select the one that’s right for your dogsbie.

Vegan Mum’s Top Picks

Here are the Best Vegan Dog Treats

OK, let’s take a look at all the different vegan dog chews and treats that have made our list – all tested by Coco and her canine pals for healthy ingredients, suitability, and perhaps most importantly, tastiness! Prices are correct at the time of publishing and are a guide only.

Shroom Paws

  • Price: from £4.01
  • Pack size: 80g
  • Type: small baked biscuits
  • Discount code: VEGANMUM

Containing Shiitake and Turkey Tail mushrooms with added pre and postbiotics, these small, natural Shroom Paws baked dog treats from the Just be Kind brand are a real winner with our dog taste-testing panel. Coco goes a little bit bonkers even just seeing the packet, perhaps because she can smell the peanut butter they also contain!

Great used as a treat or as a training reward, the ingredients are 100% hypoallergenic, gluten-free, and human grade too – so, perfect if you get a bit peckish yourself on a long walk! In addition to the tasty contents, being a vegan business, even the printing inks on the compostable pouches are plant-based too.

And if you can’t get enough of a good thing, they also make Marshmallow Bites treats, containing added ingredients like Slippery Elm and Marshmallow Root to calm your dog’s digestive system.

PlaqueOff

  • Price: from £17.99
  • Pack size: 120 chews
  • Type: small soft chew
  • Discount code: VEGANMUM

PlaqueOff is a truly amazing product that protects my dog, Coco, from her earlier poor health and life-affecting disease, whilst still firmly sitting in the ‘treat’ category as far as she’s concerned.

So, based on our experience, I can strongly recommend these products to maintain your dog’s oral health. 2 years ago, Coco had to have quite a few teeth removed under general anaesthetic due to peridontal disease and plaque – I was devastated – and I was advised the disease would be progressive (despite that operation) and that she would continue to need further extractions.

2 years later and she is free from gum disease and our vet can only put it down to Coco having a PlaqueOff treat every day. Coco loves the bone-shaped version pictured below, which she has every evening after her dinner, but all forms of this product have the same effect.

The secret ingredient? Seaweed. But, whilst the product might sound about appealing as, well…a pile of seaweed, Coco thinks it’s delicious and we also benefit from her vastly improved breath! Available for cats too.

The only downside? If your dog is being treated for a thyroid disfunction, consult with your vet before giving them this treat because the seaweed is a source of iodine that may interfere with their medication.

Omni Rescue Stress & Anxiety

  • Price: from £13.33
  • Pack size: 30 chews
  • Type: small soft chew
  • Discount code: VEGANMUM

These very appealing one-a-day supplements are another favourite treat with our doggy testing panel and their only disappointment was that they could only have the one.

And it’s another ‘treat’ that seems to have a beneficial effect because all the pet guardians of my canine testing panel reported a significant decrease in their respective dog’s anxiety levels, whether that’s due to separation, noise, or nervousness about getting in the car for example.

But, improvement didn’t happen overnight – the longer it’s taken for, the greater the impact. The ingredients, including calming L-tryptophan and passionflower, presumably build up over a period to great effect.

Omni also produce a range of training treats in the form of small baked biscuits – pictured above. All were popular, but different dogs had different favourites, so it would be difficult to recommend a specific one! Read my Omni vegan dog treats review for more detail.

Head and shoulders shot of Coco, the white lhasa apso dog, lying on the grass with a strip of orange dried papaya in her mouth. It comes from the packet to her left which contains Soopa brand's dried papaya chews for dogs

Soopa Natural Chews

  • Price: from £4.79
  • Pack size: 85g
  • Type: dried fruit/vegetable strips
  • Discount code: WY6X0J64CTXV

These Soopa Natural Chews are extremely popular with Coco. There are 3 different packs – papaya, sweet potato, and coconut – all of which are completely natural, with absolutely no other ingredients or additives. They are simply dehydrated strips containing lots of nutrients, and you could even give them a go yourself because they’re human grade! I would, except that Coco keeps a very close eye on hers and knows exactly how many are in the pack…

So, they’re great for dogs to chew on and, depending on your dog, can keep them occupied for quite some time. And with plenty in each pack, they’re good value for money too.

Another bonus is that Soopa uses a star rating system on the packaging to illustrate how appropriate the contents are for different medical conditions that dogs commonly have, and it seems they are suitable for most. My dog is prone to pancreatitis and needs low fat foods – even her treats – so these Soopa Natural Chews fit the bill perfectly (although I avoid the coconut one).

Downside? This particular product is double-wrapped in plastic, although a number of their other products are in paper-based, fully recyclable and environmentally-friendly wrappers and boxes.

Beneath is a picture of the contents - large knots made out of sweet potato - against a background picture of a field being farmed. Lying on a brick surface to the right is one of the bone shaped dog chews from the packet.

Pawtato dog chews

  • Price: from £2.38
  • Pack size: 150g
  • Type: sweet potato chews

These low fat, sweet potato Pawtato dog chews are a reasonably good vegan alternative to rawhide, but to manage your expectations they won’t last as long. That said, they will still give your dog a really good ‘chew’ experience and all the smaller members of our doggie tester panel thoroughly enjoyed them. (They come in bigger sizes for larger dogs.)

They also have other vegan dog chews in their range including Ocean treats (using seaweed) and chew sticks containing fruits and herbs. It’s also good to know that they are all hypoallergenic with most of their products being soy and grain-free.

Soopa Puppy Treats

  • Price: from £2.88
  • Pack size: 50g
  • Type: Soft training bites
  • Discount code: WY6X0J64CTXV

These low calorie, grain-free Soopa Puppy Treats are suitable from 3 months onwards. They are soft and chewy, with a reasonably short list of ingredients that all look very natural, and with no unrecognisable additives or flavourings. These make great training treats and a small dog can have up to about 5 a day (bigger dogs can have up to 10-15).

With the banana and pumpkin flavour that dogs seem to love, because these are human grade ingredients, you might even want to treat yourself – not a recommendation, obviously! But it does give you a level of confidence about the quality of these treats – particularly important when giving them to your precious pup. As with all Soopa products, you can subscribe to save yourself a bit of money – and don’t forget Vegan Mum’s exclusive discount code below too.

Dark blue rectangular cardboard box with cartoon-like images of dogs in white ink. The text identifies the brand as VegDog and the contents as bedtime cookies for dogs

VegDog Bedtime Cookies

  • Price: from £13.95
  • Pack size: 60 cookies
  • Type: baked biscuit treats
  • Discount code: VEGANMUM

Bedtime routine for your dog? Well, why not – and these Bedtime Cookies from VegDog are the perfect partner. From the same brand that produces nutritious vegan dog food (see my Green Crunch review for more info), these treats contain chamomile and L-tryptophan, a super-calming amino acid that certainly gives my dog a good night’s sleep!

With a reassuringly short list of ingredients, these cookies for dogs are also free from gluten and hypoallergenic, and were a very big hit with the canine taste testers.

Whilst this is a German brand whose products are regularly seen in supermarkets there, VegDog products are imported by Just be Kind dog food because there is increasing demand for them in the UK.

Bright green rectangular plastic packaging containing Rumble strips, a vegan jerky style dog treat

Benevo Rumble Strips

  • Price: from £2.24
  • Pack size: 180G (20 strips)
  • Type: jerky style

These Rumble Strips are made in the UK by trusted vegan brand, Benevo. But don’t let their appearance fool you too much because they are actually quite soft and don’t resemble jerky in texture!

That said, they are pretty popular, although unlike most of the products in this guide they are cereal based and so can’t be classified as hypoallergenic. But they are free from genetically modified ingredients and soy, so another good option to join this list of meatless dog treats. Benevo say that they are good for dogs of all ages, including pups too.
