My dog, Coco, has a sensitive gut that is easily inflamed, so there are periods of time when I prepare food for her at home to help calm things down a bit. And let’s face it, there’s nothing like a bit of home-cooking when you’re not feeling great, even if you’re a dog! And when it happens, I support her with this supplement because it gives her the additional nutrients required to make her diet nutritionally complete. Fortunately, she also happens to love them which is a bonus! So if you ever cook for your dog, or perhaps even feed them a fresh, or raw food diet that isn’t appropriately fortified, have a read of this Omni Home Cooking Supplement review to find out whether your dog might need these additional nutrients. I hope you find it helpful.

Who are Omni?

Omni Pet and Omni Rescue are manufacturers and suppliers of nutritionally complete wet and dry dog food, and dog supplements respectively. Co-founded by a UK based vet, all their products are plant-based, largely in environmentally-friendly packaging, suitable for vegan dogs and, as you’d expect, cruelty-free too. This company is keen to reflect their ethical values in all the products that they offer.

In addition, I have worked with this trusted brand regularly in the past to review many of their plant-based dog food and supplement products, and was delighted when they recently asked me to trial their Home Cooking Supplement. As always, this is a true reflection of my experience and reflects my honest opinion (and Coco’s)!

About Omni’s Home Cooking Supplement

Omni’s home cooking supplement is formulated to prevent any deficiencies that could result from some raw, fresh, or home-cooked diets, or for those times when you believe your dog needs extra nutritional support.

What are the key ingredients?

There is a white label all round the tub with green stripes top and bottom, and green text describing the composition, additives, analytical constituents and feeding guide for the contents which are Omni Rescue home cooking supplements for dogs

Crucially, there are certain elements that a dog must have in their diet because deficiencies can cause devastating effects on their health and wellbeing over time. Consequently, this vet-formulated supplement contains all those essential vitamins, minerals, and amino acids including:

  • amino acids Taurine and L-Carnitine
  • choline
  • B vitamins
  • essential fatty acids
  • trace elements like zinc and copper

I know that Coco, like all dogs, needs these nutrients to keep her in good health and I am confident that she is getting what she needs when I give her this supplement.

What are the benefits of using Omni’s Home Cooking Supplement?

This is an essential supplement to be used in those situations where key nutrients are missing from your dog’s diet, because it will prevent damaging deficiencies that will negatively effect their health. It’s important to note that this is not like the kind of multi-vitamin capsule that you or I might take to boost our nutritional levels but is something that should be considered if you cook for your dog at home, or feed them commercially-prepared dog foods that aren’t nutritionally complete.

It’s fair to say that many commercially-prepared dog foods – whether plant-based or using animal products – are fortified with the required nutrients to ensure they comply with FEDIAF guidelines (the European dog food industry group). However, it’s important to note that not all of them are, including some fresh, some raw, and some ‘meat-free Monday’ style diets. If they are nutritionally complete, they should be clear about that on their labelling. If they’re not, you may want to consider this product.

If you are cooking for your dog yourself, you almost certainly won’t be able to include all the required nutrients without supplementing.

How to use them

white plastic tub with the lid off, which is leaning against the front right side of the pot on a straw and grassy surface. The photo is looking down into the contents - the lid branded with 'Omni Rescue' in red and green lettering, and lettering on the front of the tub showing the contents - 1 a day soft chew home cooking supplements. The tub contains a pile of the fruit-pastille-sized chewy dog supplements

This Omni home cooking supplement comes in the form of a seemingly very tasty, fruit pastille-sized chew and when you buy them, you simply choose the right size based on whether your dog is small, medium or large. So, there’s no measuring out or mixing pastes – just chuck them a chew!

Will your dog like it? Well, there is obviously no guarantee that this dog supplement is going to suit your pooch’s discerning palate! However, my dog Coco is an incredibly fussy eater and yet has never turned down an opportunity to eat one of these palatable, chewy morsels. And as someone who has frequently tried – and failed – to prise her mouth open to unceremoniously shove a tablet down her throat, this is a real bonus! Her furry pals have also tried Omni’s range of supplements, and there have been no refusals to date; dogs seem to love eating them.

If necessary, you can also crumble these very easily on top of your dog’s food, so overall they are very easy to use.

How much do Omni Home Cooking Supplements cost?

For a medium-sized dog, a tub will cost £19.99 on subscription for a 1 month supply but there are several ways you can reduce this cost further. First of all, you can use my discount code below to get 50% off, depending on how you purchase. You can also buy a multi-pack which will make you some significant savings.

There is a further benefit too if you take out a subscription because you will be eligible for free monthly online consultations with an Omni vet. For anyone who has paid a vet bill recently, they will know what that’s worth!

Our experience of Omni Home Cooking Supplements

At the top of the picture, a close up, top-down view of the head, and little black nose of Coco, the white and champagne coloured lhasa apso dog. She is sniffing at a white plastic tub which is resting on a green grassy lawn. The tub has the brand name 'omni rescue' in red and green lettering on the label going round the tub together with the name of the product: the tub contains 'home cooking supplements'. This image is to illustrate how palatable these 1 a day chews are

My dog, Coco, was diagnosed some time ago with pancreatitis, and more recently with chronic gastroenteropathy – both long medical names that basically mean she has to be careful what she eats! She has been on a fully vegan diet for a long time, having shown significant sensitivities to animal proteins in vet-led elimination diet trials, but can still have occasional flare-ups even with commercially-prepared vegan dog foods.

At those times I tend to cook for her at home using quinoa, tofu, fresh vegetables and other similar ingredients. However, I know that won’t include some of the absolutely critical nutrients that a dog needs to live a healthy life, including amino acids like taurine and l-carnitine, B vitamins and trace elements. Consequently, I always use this Home Cooking supplement which I find to be a consistently good product.

And I do believe that this brand is reliable and trustworthy. I use several of their food and supplement products for Coco and always find them to be of high quality and ethically produced, and the fact that the co-founder is a vet who has overseen the formulation of this home cooking supplement (alongside nutritionists) also adds to my confidence levels. Not only that, but these 1-a-day chews are very easy to use, and our canine testing panel – comprising Coco and a few of her furry pals – see them as a treat and definitely enjoy eating them.

Yes, I have a bit of an issue with the plastic tubs that Omni Rescue uses for its supplements, but having seen them make positive changes to the packaging of their food products, I feel confident this is probably on their to-do list.

So in conclusion, Omni’s Home Cooking Supplement is vegan, clearly pretty tasty (if a little bit pricey) and ensures that in situations where their diet is not nutritionally complete, your dog’s health and wellbeing is not compromised. I can’t think of a single reason why I wouldn’t recommend it.
