In red and green text respectively near the top of the tub are the words 'omni' & 'rescue' which is the brand name. Underneath in paler green writing are the words 'irritated skin'. This indicates the contents of the tub which is Omni Rescue's dog supplement for irritated skin. To the right of the tub is a headshot of Doris, a black labradoodle, looking straight into the camera with her dark brown eyes. She has slightly gingery-coloured whiskers and beard and is waiting expectantly to be given one of the supplements. This image illustrates this Omni irritated skin supplement review

Poor Doris (pictured) has been one very itchy labradoodle recently, so when her dog parents mentioned it to me, I offered them some of my dog’s Omni irritated skin supplement to see if it would help. After taking them for a week or so (during which time fingers and paws were crossed) things really started to improve, and we hope that the soothing ingredients in this trusted dog supplement are now keeping those itches at bay for good.

This review tells you more about the product, explains why I believe its ingredients are helpful, and describes our experience of using it for Doris – my neighbour’s dog – and for Coco, my trusty canine companion.

The positives

These itchy skin supplements for dogs contain trusted ingredients, are incredibly easy to use, and are competitively priced. Let’s go into that in a bit more detail.

There is a white label all round the tub with green stripes top and bottom, and green text describing the composition, additives, analytical constituents and feeding guide for the contents which are Omni Rescue irritated skin supplements for dogs

Proven ingredients

This Omni Irritated Skin supplement contains some important, and well-documented ingredients that are either proven to support healthy skin, or are thought to do so. They include:

  • Vitamin E – a vitamin that is proven to support the immune system and to fight inflammation. It is also thought to help with a number of skin conditions
  • Algae – a great source of Omega fatty acids which are thought to moisturise and help fight dry, red, or itchy skin
  • Beta Glucans – found in yeasts, fungi and algae are believed to be effective in the treatment of itchy, irritated skin and associated conditions
  • Vitamin C – this critical vitamin is proven to contribute hugely to good skin health in a multitude of ways

This is not an exhaustive list, and this vet-formulated supplement contains many more useful ingredients which are anti-inflammatory, hydrating and which positively contribute to good skin health.

Competitively priced

These Irritated Skin supplements are competitively priced, although just as with human equivalents, they’re not cheap. But I feel confident that I am buying from a trusted brand and Omni’s supplements are mid price-range when compared to similar high quality products e.g. containing similar ingredients and being vet-approved.

And with Omni, you can also book free online vet consultations if you choose to subscribe to the product which – when you consider the cost of some vet interactions – feels like a real bonus.

Omni also offer discounts, including Vegan Mum’s exclusive 50% discount code: VEGANMUM and you can save money by subscribing too.

Additional lettering advises that the product is vet formulated. The tub contains a pile of chewy dog supplements which are 1-a day, illustrating they are easy to use

Easy to use

These dog supplements are so straightforward to use. It’s a 1-a-day chew that your dog is almost guaranteed to love because they smell and taste good – OK, so I’m assuming they taste good because I haven’t actually tried one myself – and they just think it’s a treat and have no idea it’s doing them good too!

Doris recognises the tub as soon as it appears and gets hugely excited, bouncing around like an overgrown puppy. Coco has a slightly more measured response, but I think that’s just because she’s smaller and less noticeable! Either way, both wolf them down very happily and would clearly continue to eat them for as long as you let them. But 1-a-day is all they should have providing you have bought the right size – they come in Small, Medium & Large.

The negatives

There aren’t many negatives about this Omni irritated skin supplement. Aside from wanting it to be cheaper (and let’s face it, we’d like everything to be cheaper) it’s really only the packaging that I take issue with.

Plastic tub

This skin supplement comes in quite a big plastic tub which then has to be recycled once you’ve finished with it – and it does take up a bit of space in your recycling bin too! It’s probably about half the height of a standard 400g tin of tomatoes, but a bit more squat, and there is quite a lot of empty space in the tub even when it is technically ‘full’. I really hope that Omni address this issue as they have with some of their other products because it just doesn’t seem to fit with their environmentally-friendly credentials.

Our experience of Omni’s Irritated Skin Supplement

Doris, my neighbour’s labradoodle, is a large and energetic bundle of lovable black fur who runs towards you rather like you’d imagine a charging rhinoceros would. Fortunately, she seems to swerve just at the last moment which always comes as quite a relief.

Anyway, meeting on a recent dog walk, her pet parents mentioned that she had been scratching herself manically and was becoming quite distressed. They said that she’d always had quite sensitive skin, but her discomfort had become noticeably worse over the last few months. Having ruled out all the obvious things like fleas and ticks, they were booking an appointment with the vet to take a look at her. However, in the meantime, I suggested they could try out the Omni Irritated Skin Supplements that I had just started Coco on.

After a few days of taking them, they saw a gradual reduction in her scratching, and it continued to improve in the following weeks. Needless to say, Doris has now become an enthusiastic fan of these 1-a-day chews – you might just get a hint of that from the picture above – and she goes ever so slightly bananas when she sees the tub. The chew disappears almost before you’ve managed to take it out of the tub!

I really like the fact that these supplements are so easy to use, and that dogs don’t require any persuasion to eat them either. Coco takes Omni’s joints & mobility supplement regularly after her breakfast, and being a dog that loves routine, she looks expectantly at me as soon as she’s finished eating. She loves them, although puts a bit more thought to chewing them than Doris does!

Anyway so far, so good with Doris. It looks like the supplementation has succeeded, although of course it is difficult to be 100% sure whether a supplement has caused the improvement. But nothing else has changed, and these do contain many ingredients that are scientifically proven to combat skin inflammations and reactions to allergens. They certainly seem to be helping Doris who is happily not scratching any more, and continues to enjoy taking her 1-a-day chew.

So, all that is left for me to do now is keep Doris and Coco apart for a while because Coco would like to know where her irritated skin supplements have gone, and she can be pretty mean when she gets angry…
