In urban areas it’s vehicle emissions, industrial activity and power generation; in the countryside it’s other people’s bonfires, domestic wood burners, tractor diesel fumes, crop-spraying, and allergens. Wherever we live, we’re consistently exposed to a cocktail of pollutants and irritants that can significantly harm our health.
Living in a dusty 400 year old cottage in the back of beyond, surrounded by heavily-farmed fields and neighbours with seemingly endless bonfires, I’m afraid I make my own contaminant contribution too with oil-fired central heating, an infrequently-used wood burner, and no cooker hood to extract cooking fumes. Throw in my love of incense and smelly candles and it becomes obvious I exist in a heady cocktail of ‘fug’.
That’s why I thought I should invest in something to give my lungs a bit of a breather and this Levoit Air Purifier review explains whether using an air filter has made any difference to the air quality in my home.

Thank you to Levoit for sending me an air purifier to trial. However, this post is not sponsored by them and the opinions expressed are mine based on my use of the product. The brand has had no editorial input.

My experience
For the purpose of this Levoit air purifier review, I have been using their Core 300S Smart Air Purifier in my house for the last 6 weeks. In order to understand how well it performs in different situations, I have tested it in my kitchen whilst cooking, in the living room with the wood burner going and when I have candles lit, and in various locations when neighbours have had bonfires.
And whilst I don’t have city traffic whizzing past my door, we get more than our fair share of heavy farm vehicles and equipment, all fuelled by extremely smelly diesel which regularly permeates my rather drafty cottage. Therefore, I have kept the air purifier on its ‘auto’ setting for much of the time too which has proven to be really useful because it responds quickly to remedy any deterioration in air quality.
Initially it was very easy to set up and start using, and the box included a full user manual as well as an informative ‘getting started’ leaflet taped to the top of the product itself. You don’t need to download the app to make good use of it, but I did so because it gives me more information about the air quality and…well, I’m a bit of a nerd. The app also allows me to control it remotely, and to set schedules if I need the air purifier to come on or change settings at specific times.
Overall, I’ve used this product in a good range of different scenarios and feel confident I’ve objectively identified its key benefits and drawbacks for this review including effectiveness, costs, and ease of use.

It’s responsive & effective
Wherever I have placed the Levoit air purifier, it has been incredibly quick to respond to changes in air quality. I tend to leave it on the auto setting to do its thing because it is regularly assessing the air quality via a built-in sensor, and then adapts the fan speed accordingly.
When I’m lighting the wood burner, it reacts initially until I close the door of the stove and then returns the air quality to normal in less than a minute. And within seconds of me opening it again to load more logs, it detects the change and ramps up until it has once again cleared the air. It’s amazing and certainly makes me feel much happier about my occasional use of the fire.
The same is true when I blow out my candles and there’s that waxy, fumy smell, or when my neighbours have yet another bonfire – all odour and fumes are cleared within a minute or two. The photos above indicate it going through the different stages from red to orange to blue, and finally to green again (green is good)!
And whilst trying to not be boring about this, it is equally effective in my kitchen. This is particularly important for me because it is the room that you enter my house through, I have no extractor fan, and I hate it when it smells of last night’s spicy dal! Well, it now smells as fresh as a daisy thanks to this!

The Levoit Air Purifier is simple to use
The first thing to say is – I love a manual. Yes, I know it’s a bit wasteful, but this is not overdone, it’s very informative and easy to understand, and I think it helped me to make the most of the product straightaway without having to search through online instructions.
There is also a very straightforward app which gives you more information, and offers additional functions like setting up schedules and remote control. That said, the displays on the air purifier itself are very logical and clear and give you all the information you really need.
And as I’ve mentioned previously, I leave the product on auto most of the time – apart from at night and times when the dog is on her own in the house because it would freak her out if the fan speed increased for any reason!
Comparison of costs and models
Several air purifiers in their range have been rated by Which as ‘Best Buy’ and ‘Good Choice’ too, but as with many comparable products from other brands, running costs vary between models. And whilst looking at other brands, it’s fair to say that Levoit’s products are competitively priced, although not cheap.
Replacement filters vary in price with the standard ones coming in at less than £30. The good thing is that you should only have to replace them every 6-8 months (with cleans in between) so I see it as a worthwhile investment in my health. Unfortunately though, they’re not recyclable and my online searches suggest this is true for all the brands I’ve looked at.
Anyway, check out their website to see the full range, but I have compared 3 examples below of products intended for small, medium, and large rooms – the prices quoted are subject to change. See my discount code below too, and of course check Levoit’s online store for other regular discounts.

My verdict on this Levoit Air Purifier Review
I’m really pleased with this product and I believe it has made a real difference to the air quality in my home. It is relatively quiet at low speeds (obviously noisier at maximum speed!) and unobtrusive, and yet removes odours and fumes remarkably quickly and effectively.
I also feel reassured that several of Levoit’s air purifiers have been independently tested by Which and have performed well in those tests, with resulting ‘Best Buy’ and ‘Good Choice’ options. Their positive findings certainly support my experience of using this product.
I haven’t yet had the opportunity to try it during high allergy season (and goodness knows I need help then!) but I will be sure to update this review once that season hits us again. In the meantime, it’s doing a great job with everything else.
So, if you’re looking for a decently priced, trustworthy, effective air purifier, I would certainly suggest you take a look at Levoit’s range. I think it compares well with its competitors and personally, I’m a real convert and would definitely recommend it.
